FUN FOR EVERYONE (almost)

WOW!  It has been a long time since my last post!  I would like to tell you that I have been away on an extravagant vacation, or that someone broke into my house and stole my computer, or that my hands have been bandaged since burning them while saving a baby from a burning building, but none of that would be true.  The truth is that I am none too bright.  I have been involved in a battle of wits with my computer and it has been winning.  You know that I have been having struggles trying to post videos but it got more and more difficult to blog, to the point of frustration and walking away.  However, today seems to be a good day so I will post quickly before the demon in this Mac decides to act up again.

Friday, the 12th, Robyn asked me to take her to the fair.  She was to meet up with some girlfriends from high school that she hasn't seen in a while.  In the meantime, I wanted to check out our display from work at the All Things Concrete house, as well as visit my brother who was working a booth in the Varied Industries building.  She asked that I hang with her until her friends got there.  It's a good thing we have cell phones because the crowd was enormous and finding her friends would have been impossible.  Look at this crowd...

I think that's them, toward the back middle, in the white shirt

Robyn and I walked the midway, being pestered by a few carnies along the way, and we noticed the incredible number of teen-agers there.  As we walked onto main street (pictured above) where the beer is served, we noticed the large number of twenty somethings there.  When we moved into the Varied Industries Building, where all the wares are sold, we noticed the people more our age.  It's no wonder they draw over a million people a year to the fair, there's something for everyone.  As for me and Robyn, it is the funnel cake that makes us go to the fair.  Yummm.  We stopped at one of the bars and ordered a beer.

Cheers!
A couple of hours passed and her girlfriends hadn't gotten there yet, so we decided to head home.  Here is a helpful hint if you ever go to the Iowa State fair.  After you park and start walking toward the main gate, take a moment to look back so you remember where you parked.  We didn't have to look too long but there was some confusion as to who's yard we parked in.  Everyone in the neighborhood turns their yard into a parking lot at fairtime.  I think we may do that next time there is a neighborhood garage sale in our area.

Saturday morning I had an invitation to golf with some friends from our small group.  Now they can actually golf so I'm not sure why I was asked to play (comic relief?) but even though I stink at the game, I love being out there.  Here is a pic of Keith blasting one out of the sand.  He put it with-in a few feet of the cup.

Who dosen't love a beach party?
I shot a 109.  In my defense, it is the longest, most difficult course around and I did have two birdie shots.  I didn't make them but I did, at one point, sink four LONG putts in a row (one was paced off at thirty feet) and had three pars in a row and four out of five to boot.  I also hit two water hazards and a sand trap.  Luckily, I skipped out of one pond and bounced out of the sand trap.  On top of that I startled a large snake when I reached for the ball next to the water.  This snake was big enough to make me jump back.  As a matter of fact I may have pee'd a little.

While I was out having fun Robyn was taking Calvin to the vet.  No emergency, he was due for shots and a heart worm test.  Here he is posing with his new wristband.

He thinks red is his color
That evening, Robyn and I had a game night planned with some friends.  Robyn wasn't feeling well, she was bothered with flu like symptons for over a week, so I headed over by myself.  After a nice dinner we decided to play some yard games.  Someone actually had a set of lawn darts, the old ones with steel tips.  These have been banned for over two decades.  I know the reason why.  When I was younger, my siblings and I, along with the neighborhood kids, would play lawn darts, with our own rules.  In our game you had to stand inside the circle while your opponent tried to stick a dart in your circle.  If you jumped out of the circle before the dart landed you lost.  We called it death darts.  I think we quit playing when my brother took a dart to the top of his foot.  I couldn't talk this group into playing death darts.  I guess wisdom does come with age.

The circle looks much smaller now
Sunday, after church, I tried to get my hot tub working.  It has been on the fritz since last fall.  After two agonizing hours and a whole lot of head scratching, I closed the access panel and started researching used hot tubs.  I may have found a source that refurbishes old tubs and buys used ones.  I will let you know if we take this route.  We really miss our hot tub, we used it all year round.  There is nothing like tubbing under the stars or being in the hot tub when it is snowing.

Don't tell me it's not rocket science.  This is a UFO
When I was at the fair, we stopped by a booth called the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt.  I entered my name in their computer and found out that I had some unclaimed money out there.  So Monday night I filled out the forms and mailed them in.

Every penny counts
I went to the websight and found out that one of my brothers, one of my sisters and my mom all had money waiting to be claimed.  I felt like Santa Clause when I called and informed them.  It's good to give, even if it was theirs to begin with.

I had to tend bar Monday night to cover for the regular bartender, but I was able to watch Monday Night Football.

Tuesday, Robyn was still under the weather so I was responsible for my own dinner..

Not nutritious, but colorful
After my awesome dinner I went to the shop to finish up the drawer boxes for my side job.

Wednesday I had to tend bar again.
Thursday at work we began another large project.  This is a kitchen with almost 100 square feet of countertop.  This one is in Gravity Iowa.  My boss says the people there are really down to earth.. I will give you a few seconds... OK, ..down to earth.. Gravity.. get it?  Well I never said my boss was funny.

Friday after work I went and Installed the cabinets I have been making.  I will install the doors and drawer faces next week.

perfect fit
Sunday was back to church.  My friend who is struggling so much is still in need of a meeting with Pastor Tom.  When we had our last scheduled meeting, he asked if we could use that time to move some of his belonging to a secure place.  There is a lot more to the story but sufice it to say that his troubles trump anything I face.  Here it is more than a week later and I still need to make this meeting happen.  I did talk on the phone to him today and he sounds better but he focuses on his problems and that only seems to magnify them.  I told him I will work on arranging a get together for him but in the meantime I asked him to read and meditate on Philippians 4:6-9.  The very same verse read by Michelle Bachmann at church a couple weeks earlier.  It can truely lift your burden if you seek Him with your heart..

Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything.  Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done.  Then you will experience God's peace, which exceeds anything we can understand.  His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing.  Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable.  Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.  Keep putting into practice all you learned and recieved from me - everything you heard from me and saw me doing.  Then the God of peace will be with you.

Or you can feel better like Robyn did this afternoon..

in her element
She is feeling better.  I feel better by viewing God's beauty all around me.

Awesome

Peace

I told you last time that we got rained out at the balloon festival because pilots hate wet balloons.
So we went home early.  We thought we may catch Canyon having a party (playing x-box on my big screen) but when we got home he wasn't even there.  I texted him to find out where he was and Robyn and I sat down to watch TV and wait for a reply.  That was when we heard a car door slam and looked out the window.  We were very surprised to see Canyon and four of his friends climbing out of his car.  He took it for a little joy ride.  He has no liscense, and we just canceled the insurance.
Upset?  Yeah, we were a little upset.  Not so much that he took the car when he knew he wasn't supposed to, but more because of the fact that we both didn't notice a WHOLE CAR missing from in front of our house.
All Canyon's friends bailed on him.  They said "c'mon let's just go to the park" but Canyon said no.  He came inside to face the music.  That actually took some of the heat off for him.  We took the keys and scolded him.  We reaffirmed to him that he always gets busted, after all he is 'Lil Griswald'.
He told us that he just wants to drive.  We said if he had been pulled over his liscense would be suspended until he is 21.  We can only hope that it eventually sinks in.  We told him that we were listing the car on Craigslist to see if we could sell it.  He paid 1200 a few months ago.  I suspected we might get 500 after he broke the tail light, removed the stereo, busted the windshield and deployed the airbags (all this happened with him putting less than 25 miles on the car).  Any money less than 1200 dollars would be his loss and hopefully a lesson learned.  I personally wouldn't give 100 bucks for this rolling turd.

Friday night Robyn and I were supposed to go to the I-Cubs game with some people from church, but rain was on again-off again, and after being washed out of the balloon festival we decided to skip it.  We went out and had a nice dinner instead.  With the left overs we had dinner the next night too.

Saturday I began a new side project.  I'm building a bathroom vanity for a client.  I made cabinets for their other house and now they are remodeling their master bath.

$270 worth?

As the cloud of saw dust setteled I had magicaly turned that 270 dollar pile into...

$400 cabinets (so far)

By this time next week they should be about a 700 dollar vanity.  I will keep you posted.

Sunday, when we pulled into church we saw this in the drive.

Mixing politics and religion?
It so happens that she was in Iowa for the straw poll and just wanted to go to church here.  Point of Grace has offered the auditorium for political debates and such in the past (not on Sunday tho) and Michelle Bachmann and her husband have become friends with Pastor Jeff and his family through that.
It also happened to be the day after 30 soldiers died in a helicoptor crash in Afganistan.  Pastor Jeff asked Michelle and her husband if they wanted to say anything to the people at church.  She said although it was a sad time, God tells us to put our minds on things that are good and she read a passage from the bible.  Philippians 4: 4-9.

Always be full of joy in the Lord.  Again I say, rejoice!  Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do.  Remember, the Lord is coming soon.

I had a video of Michelle Bachmann reading the passage to post here, but there were technical difficulties.  Sorry.

Sunday night, just before 10 pm I posted Canyon's car for sale on Craigslist.  I was going to list it for $800 and hope for the best but Robyn said to make it $900, so we did.  At 10:02 my phone rang.  Someone wanted to know if they could come look at the car.  I said it's dark outside but they didn't care so I said be my guest.  I got calls until midnight.
Monday morning the phone rang a 5:30 and didn't stop ringing all day.  People wanted to know about the car.  What could I say?  I told them about all the little problems it had but let them know the motor was good.  I got calls from Colfax, from Missouri and from Lincoln Nebraska.  I got text messages galore.  And every time I tried to listen to a voice mail someone would beep in.  I even had a dozen e-mails.  Robyn entertained prospective buyers from 8:30 until 10.  Then when she got home at 4 they started showing up again.  It got to the point that when somebody asked about the car I just said, "listen, it's a 900 dollar car.  It's exactly what you think it is, no more, no less".  By the time I got home from work, Robyn had sold it for $750.  I couldn't get the ad off Craigslist fast enough.  I will never put my phone number on an ad again.  The buyer gave us a hundred bucks down and said she would be back tomorrow.  I told canyon to make some sold signs and tape them in the windows so nobody would knock on the door.  Then a truck pulled up and a large man got out.  He looked at the sold sign and came up the driveway anyway.  I told him it was sold.  He said why didn't you call me and let me know? (seriously?)  I said I have no idea who you are.  He said I told you I was on my way here.  (again, seriously?)  I said I got a thousand calls and EVERYBODY said they were on their way.  Sorry, first come, first served.  He was not happy.  I kept my truck between us.  He left in a huff.

ding dong the witch is dead

Monday at work we began processing the big table for the bar in Lawerance Kansas.  It needs to be sealed but here is a close up of the middle section..

This may make cyclone fans puke

We will do the install next week.  It might be a fun road trip.

Tuesday, I struggled.  A counter top chipped (I didn't do it) and the boss was not thrilled.  He was already having a tuff day when we gave him this news.  I immeditaly began reforming the top so we could make a new one.  When the boss came back to my area, he placed the blame on me.  I took the heat but thought the person responsible would accept the blame, he didn't. (I found out later that he thought the boss was upset with all of us)  Anyway, it upset me that he didn't step forward.  I was struggling with a bit of anger.  I couldn't concetrate on my work because of it.
Then to compound my frustrations, I made a call to a friend who is suffering much bigger struggles than myself.  I was trying to set up a meeting between him and a pastor from church which we had discussed all week end.  He was very irrate.  His situation had intensified and he vented on me.  I wished there was something I could do to ease his burden.
I thought of the new study my small group is starting.  It is a book called 'To Busy not to Pray' by Bill Hybels.  I had just read the first chapters the night before and it talks about the reasons we don't pray, or pray weakly when we do.  Sometimes weak prayer comes from weak faith.  It was me it was talking about.
After I hung up the phone, I told God that I wanted to pray sincerely.  I know he listens and I know he answers.  I prayed that I could release the bitterness I was feeling and I prayed for my friend.  I asked God to show me what I needed to do to help my friend calm his storm.  I cried and suddenly thought of Robyn.  I was swept over with a feeling of peace and strength.  My anger was gone.  God showed me how wonderful He is by letting me know that I have no reason to feel bitter.  I am one lucky man.
Then I recieved a text from my friend, he apoligized for spouting off and asked me to please set up a meeting.  God was with him too.  I don't know yet how this will all work out, but I do know that God will lead me.  I can't wait to get deeper into this new study.

Until next time..

Peace

PILOTS HATE WET BALLOONS

Friday night was finally here.  It was time to relax and let the stress of work melt away.  After a long, hot week of work Robyn and I thought it sounded like a good idea to spend a quiet evening at our friends house and enjoy a glass of wine.  But as these things can sometimes go, a glass turned into a bottle and then a few bottles.   Here is a pic of me, Robyn, Julie and Paul as we begin to wind down from the hectic work week.

The calm before the storm

Saturday we had to work... well, I had to work.  Robyn wasn't feeling the best, and she wasn't happy I was taking this picture...

She may have wound down too far
I had a side job to get done.  A while ago I put in a microwave and tiled a kitchen for a client.  Because they wanted the micro hung at an unusual height, I had to make a special cabinet to go above it.  The client's father had made some decorative steel plates before he passed away and they asked if I could incorperate them into a door for the cabinet  Here are some photos of the proceedure.

some assembly required
looks like it came with the kitchen
Sunday it was off to church.  We were welcomed at the door by some members of our small group.  They serve as greeters one Sunday a month.

Doug, Jan, Dale and Gayle (You can see here shoe behind Dale)
On the way out I spotted these two giant silk moths "wrestling" on the ground.  Each one was as big as my hand.  I was a little disgusted that they would be carrying on like that on church property.

Kind of a rare sight in the wild
Monday at work we began the process of demolding and polishing the tables for Johnny's Hall of Fame.  It is a sports bar downtown on Court Ave.  If you happen to be in the Court Ave district, these tables will be located on their sidewalk patio.  You should check them out.

lookin super sweet
On Tuesday we applied the second coat of slurry, let it dry and polished them up.  Each one has a built in umbrella stand in the middle.

Do I have a great job, or what

On Wednesday, I took my lunck break time to run over to the gold and silver buyer's shop.  Robyn had a small amount of broken old gold bracelets and ear rings and such that she just never wore so we decided to see what we could get.  Honestly, the pile fit in the palm of my hand.  As I watched the buyer check each piece and then weigh them he would scribble down information on a pad.  The numbers seemed high to me.  He totaled it and said One thousand blah blah dollars.  I don't think he finished his sentence and I blurted out SOLD!
Then I went into the area where they buy silver coins.  Here is a pic of the lady that helped me over there.  She was relucctant to have her pic taken, and actually I wasn't sure if I was allowed to take a picture in there but I was feeling a little giddy from the sale of the gold so I just asked.

note the small pile of coins in the box
I used to buy a little silver from my dad when ever I went up to Sioux City.  But I hadn't bought any in over a decade.  I don't know what I payed all together but I had 37 dollars in face value.  I almost fainted when she said it was worth 1200 dollars.
That was quite likely the best lunch break I have ever had.
Thursday it was back to work where we poured the 18 foot long bar for Lawerance Kansas.  Here it is setting up.

Thats a lot of concrete
I took of an hour early because Robyn and I wanted to go to the annual hot air balloon festival.  They have a launch at 6:30, a band and a night glow(where they shoot the flames into the balloons in the dark, awesome sight) at dusk followed by fireworks.  There is a carnival that goes with it.  The last time we went was when Canyon was 6 or 7 years old and he's 16 now so we were excited to see it again.  We took my truck to avoid putting miles on our leased car but half way there we realized our camping chairs were in her car.  So we decided to stop at Wal-mart.  We were running late and I didn't want to miss the big balloon launch.  We quickly found the chairs and rushed up to the "speedy" check out lane.  The line wasn't moving to fast so we moved to the next open lane and waited behind the one customer in that line.  Unfortunately for us it seems it was a long lost friend of the checker.  The cashier actually stopped checking items and comenced to chatting up a storm.  So we went back to the "speedy" lane and the one customer in that line picked that moment to argue with the cashier weather the shredded cheese was supposed to be 4 dollars or 3.85.
PRICE CHECK on isle "speedy".  So we ran all the way down to the self check out lane where the machine decided to take this moment to tell me my credit card wasn't mine!  It did take my cash though so we were on our way.
This was the first day in a long time that the temperature was below 90 and the humidity was normal.  It looked to be a really nice night.  Then it started to sprinkle.  I thought that it was great, that the crowds wouldn't be crazy and we might be able to get in a short line for a balloon ride.  As we pulled into the parking lot the gate keeper told us the balloons were in a delay until 7.  Great.  We hadn't missed a thing.
The rain was a little heavier now but still not too bad.  We walked onto the fair grounds to a sparse crowd.  Most were in the souviener shop or under the canopy of a food vendor if they didn't have an umbrella.  And that's exactly where we headed.  We stood under the awning of a vendor who had taped a paper plate to the window with the message 'back tomorrow' scrawled on it.  We ate (the mildly warm pulled pork sandwiches we got at another food stand) next to a woman who told us she used to be with one of the balloon teams.
She told us that it wasn't looking good for a launch.  I said what about the night glow.  She shook her head and said "Pilots don't like wet balloons".  I looked at Robyn and she said "The Griswalds strike again"
We headed home a little bummed but it's not all bad, at least we have an extra 2 grand in the bank.
Tomorrow night we are going to the baseball game with some people from church.  Pray for no rain.

Peace

Dan
