SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY

I think someone needs to talk to Robyn about this day of rest thing.  She keeps us going.  Of course it's Sunday so that means church.  We love it.  Canyon went with us today (he usually goes at night when the high schoolers meet) and I think he actually listened to the message.  It was about not wasting you life doing nothing but instead living for others to leave a legacy that lives on after you're gone.  Here are some pics.

Point of Grace Church      We love this place

Pastor Jeff - Sings like an angel

Pastor Tom - Sings like..um...   He's a nice Guy

I told you yesterday that we ran some errands.  What I didn't tell you was that one stop was at a fitness place.  Yup.  We got memberships.  So immediatly after church we went home and changed clothes and headed out for MY first workout in almost a half a century.  Here is our new torture.. I mean fitness place.

No more getting sand kicked in my face

Canyon has lifted weights and worked out before, when he was on the football team, so he will be my teacher.  One of the first things he taught me was that the eliptical machine has some sharp edges.

WE GOT A BLEEDER!

That bandage was my triage handiwork.  It was like trying to patch the Titanic.  It wasn't gonna hold so we cut our work out short and headed home so nurse Robyn could stop the leak.

Mommy fix the boo boo

The good news is thanks to Canyon's teachings I didn't bleed at all on my first day.  I am a little sore though, as a matter of fact typing this blog hurts my arms.

Did I say we cut our work out short?  That was not entirely true.  The work out continued at home because we decided to move Canyon's bedroom up from the basement.  He was having a little trouble getting up for school.  If you have ever cleaned out a teen-agers room, I mean really clean, you know what a chore that can be.  If that wasn't enough, while we were down in the basement Robyn decided it was time to put the Christmas decorations back in storage.  We have Way to many decorations.

Not much room in there
After some rearranging I was able to get all eight containers in there with room to spare.  But it's kind of like Jenga in there, you have to be careful how you remove things.

Maybe we can put Canyon's bed in here
Time to wind down with a glass of wine, a fire in the fire place and some football.  Go NFC!

Tomorrow starts another week.

Watta week

It has been a really long week since I blogged last, I couldn't wait till 5 o'clock Friday.

Monday after a hard days work we had S.P.A. conference (student, parent, advisor) with Canyon's advisor.
We set up Canyon's classes for next year.  I don't remember doing that at my high school.  I think they offer a lot more class options now.  He wants to go into computer programming as a career so we selected classes accordingly.  We got home in time for bed.

Tuesday after work we met with our small group and started a new study.  Seeing God as God Wants us to See Him.  It says that it will help is not only in our relationship with God, but in all our relationships.  It's taught by Chip Ingram, he is excelent.  We got home just in time for bed.

Wednesday after another hard day at work I had to go to work, at my other job.  I couldn't watch Idol because everybody there wanted to play the jukebox.  I got home way after bed time.

Thursday after a very tired day at work we met with our other small group. (the one we lead)  We got together at Robyn's new place of employment (more on that later) and finished up the study we were doing.  It was about building our faith even when we think God has abandoned us.  By the way, he never will.  One important thing I took away was that we should not only thank God for the things he has done for us, but we should thank Him for the things ne will do.  He is faithful in all His promsises.  He has plans to prosper us.  We got home and went to bed because I was exhausted.

Friday after another dirty day at work, I stopped at redbox and picked up a movie.  Robyn and I watched Crazy Heart while Canyon helped our friends move some furniture.  We liked the movie but it was kind of slow and pretty sad.

Then came Saturday.  Canyon had to work two hours after school at McDonalds.  As you can tell in the picture, it just about killed him.

Dreaming of french fries

I wasn't doing much better.  Sleep depravation has an effect on your looks.

Must...have...coffee..

We had our coffee, cleaned up and headed out to take care of some errands.  First stop, the bank.  We needed to deposit Robyn's tips from the coffee shop.  She has been there two weeks now and is starting to like it.  The money isn't much but there is potential.  Here is a picture of two weeks tips.

sweet cash

Debbie made about 5 times this in one night this week.  We needed to go to a hobby and craft store to get some things for Canyon's art project.  The ride was kind of tuff on me because, well I'll show you.

We finished our errands and decided to stop at the new GoodWill in Waukee to see if we could find any treasures to resell and bolster our income.  It seems to work for my brother Steve.  Here we are arriving at the gold mine.

Robyn strikes a pose

We didn't find much but Canyon noticed this old looking cigar tin ad.  I took a pick with my phone and we went home to research it.  We found one on e-bay that was currently bid at $71.  Canyon and I went back up and bought it for $1.99.  Now we have to figure out how to list it and see what happens.  Heres a pic.

Ruff shape but we'll see..

Well, I got one more thing to get done and then we will sit down and get some rest.  It seems that someone has been putting fertilizer down on my back yard, a LOT of fertilizer.  I gotta go shovel some of that up.

That's not clumps of dirt on the grass

Until next time..

Peace

Dan

THE LIST

It's sunday!  A day of rest.  Not!  Robyn has her list and away we go.  But first we went to church.  I was a little devil and pirated these videos on my phone.

I love Jeff's singing.  The lesson was speaking directly to us, again.  It was about being good stewards of all God has entrusted us with.  They talked about finances, which includes tithing.  Talked about how we should not pick out of the bible what we want to follow and when it comes to tithing, putting on our blinders and saying we don't have to do that.  Jeff called it a buffet bible.  Taking some of this and some of that but not taking the pieces we don't like.  The bible is not a buffet,  it's all or nothing.  It was a good service.  We are trying to get to ten percent, and we will.

After church we had to stop by the YMCA (It was on the list) and check out membership prices for low income families.  Hopefully we can qualify so we can work out.  We all need it.  Ironically, last weeks message from church was about our health and how the body is God's temple.

Next we came home and picked up Canyon to go get food and shoes.  But first we had to stop by McDonalds to find out Canyon's hours.

Canyon's new home away from home

He starts Wednesday. Yippie!  His manager told us that the place where uniforms are provided was open anytime so Canyon wanted to exchange the shirts he was given because they were too tight around the neck.  So we quickly headed home and got his other shirts and headed to the warehouse.  Of course when we got there it was closed.

Back to the list.  Next was WalMart.  The adventure continues.  I told you exciting things happen to us.  Here is a pic of Canyon and Robyn in the parking lot.

Robyn is camera shy

We first stopped by the health and beauty section.  Canyon loves this section.

This video is a much better quality because when I found out we were going on an adventure I grabbed the camera.  You can see the adventureer gleeming in Canyon's eyes, can't you?  We shopped around a little then stopped at the Subway in the Walmart.

My wife and I on a dinner date

Now you can see the gleem in my eye.  After lunch we headed back out to continue our adventure in Wally World.  We found the shoes Canyon needed for work, only 30 bucks and as a bouns we found me a much needed pair of dress shoes for only 20 bucks.  At the register we found out our adventure was gonna cost us.  200 smackers!  Robyn said she usually gets out of there for around 50.

Holy Crap!

When we got everything loaded in the car I thought we must have forgotten a few bags but no, this is what you get for 200 bucks.

$200 worth?

We concluded our adventure by going home, putting away groceries, and watching some football... ok, I watched football.  Robyn said her work is never done.  I think I will add something to the list.  Maybe we need some wine.

  That will make everything better.

Until another day,..
Peace

WINTERJAM CONCERT

I told you we were going to a concert, but let me give you a little back story that lead up to this point.

At church last Sunday a couple from one of our small groups was sitting in front of us.  It was the couple (Mark and Sara McDowell) that were involved in a near deadly car accident with a drunk driver last year.
After service they turned and asked if we were going to WinterJam.  We told them we were not and they asked why. I jokingly said that food was higher on our priority list.  He asked us if they could buy our tickets.  At first we said that wasn't necessary but he insisted so we accepted the offer. (I later found out the tickets were only ten bucks and felt bad that he had to offer to buy)

Well that brings us to last night.  The concert didn't start til seven but the doors opened at six.  We were to meet at the door at six.  In my mind that would be plenty early to provide me with a close parking spot.  I mean it's early, it's a christian concert and it is a single digit temperature outside.  How many people would there be?

OK. As we got off the freeway to go to Wells Fargo Arena, traffic was backed up to the exit ramp.  I was a little surprised to say the least.  When we finally got close to the parking area I was a little concerned by the shear number of cars in the lot.  When we were just three cars back from the entrance, the attendant put out the 'Lot Full' sign.  Seriously?   C'mon, it's a christian concert, and we are early.  I assumed there was something else going on at Veterans Auditorium.

I dropped Robyn off near the front entrance and drove several blocks looking for a parking spot.  A long, frigid walk later and I was catching up to Robyn inside the door.  The crush of people astounded me.  (This is where we get the Griswold moniker, these things happen to us)  How would we ever find the McDowells?  They had our tickets.  Then Robyn spotted Sara.  Here is a pic of the two of them at the concert.

Robyn and Sara

This is when things suddenly changed.  We were the Griswolds no more.  Sara and Mark informed us that our tickets had been upgraded.
Several of the people from our small group work for Pioneer Hybred Seed Company (A multi billion dollar organization) and Pioneer happens to have a suite at Wells Fargo Arena.  Our whole small group joined us for the concert in the suite.  Those with small children brought them along.  It was fun watching the kids dance to the music.  I have included a pic of the suite and the view of the stage.

Theater seating beyond the bar

That's Mark enjoying the show

Food and beverages were provided and the Show was incredible.  I have heard many of the artist on the radio station I listen to and it is possible you have too.  The News Boys were headliners.  Their latest album debuted on Billboards top 100 list at number four.  I'm sure you would recognize some of their songs.  I have a couple videos to post but am not sure of the picture or sound quality.  Sadly, I forgot the camera and had to use my antique phone.

The first one I believe is Francescia Banastelli.  There were ten artists or groups including hard rock, rap, gospel, grunge, and pop.

The second video is the News Boys.  They were awesome.  I would pay to see them in concert by themselves.  The lead singer reminded me of Mick Jagger.  He danced around and his singing was spectacular.  The guitarist and keyboard player were on platforms that raised and went out over the audience.  The lead singer was out on a catwalk that had a rising pedastal that took him nearly 25 feet up in the air.  The drummer was also on a platform that rose up and then tipped vertically while he was still drumming.  That was pretty cool but it wasn't all, because then his raised, vertical platform began spinning, very rapidly.  It was AWESOME!  Everyone should have a chance to see them live.

There was also some preaching and witnessing.  It included a very inspirational story of a baby of a institutionalized prostitute.  He was beaten and abused for many years, almost to the point of suicide. He was finally shown the promises of God and it transformed him into the incredible pastor and gifted speaker that was witnessing to us right then.  All in all it was phenominal.  Very uplifting and entertaining.  I am so happy we went.

This morning we are just relaxing and reading by a fire.  Here is my lovely wife and her cat by the fire.

Hobbs and Robyn staying warm

Well, I need to get back to the fire and my coffee.  I'm sure there is more excitement in the future for the Griswolds.  I'll let you know what happens next in a future blog.

Peace

Dan

BIRTHDAY BASH & BLOG REHASH

I went out to spend some time with my sister Deb tonight, she was celebrating her birthday.  She must think I'm skinny because she kept trying to force food on me.  Beef Wellington, cake, and cup cakes.  I had none.  I'm not skinny and I am living off the fat of Dan.
We did shoot some pool.  Debbie asked me to be her partner so we proceded to kick some butt on the table.  Although I was told we lost the first game because I put in their ball when I was shooting at the eight ball.  I don't know that rule.  So after that misunderstanding, we didn't let that happen again.  Debbie must be really strong because I am not skinny and she was able to carry me.  My game was not at its peek.
It was nice going out but it would have been better if Robyn could have joined me.  Where was she, you ask?

The answer to that question is part two of the story.

Several days ago I told you that Robyn was going to train for a job at the coffee shop and see if she liked it.  Well, she does.  She is actually quite excited about it.  She had her second day of training today.  It was scheduled for 10 till 3.  But she wanted to stay and help Lori get everything baked and set up for the opening on Monday.  Robyn didn't get home until 7:30.  She was pretty tired and had a headache coming on.  I told her that was a really long day and she didn't have to go out with me tonight.
On that same subject, when she trained Thursday, she forgot Canyon's orthodontist appointment and didn't get his retainer.  I don't think he was all that upset.

As for my work... You know, there is power in prayer.  I asked my small group to pray with me about Robyn's unemployment and a job came her way.  I asked them to pray with me about my fears of being laid off and as of today, I can't keep up with the jobs coming in (as a matter of fact I had to go in for a few hours today to try to catch up).  I currently have approximately 26 pieces of paper strewn on my desk of scenes, ideas, and other script that I will soon begin to put in story form for part two of Brink.  I love writing and these ideas of scenes or characters just pop in my head.  I know it is His work through me and I am excited to put it all together for the enjoyment and benifit of others.

I will keep praying for us but also for you.  You should pray too.  You watch.  Good things will happen that you can't explain.  Not always big things or miricles, but little things.  When that happens, you'll know.  Don't forget to thank the big guy upstairs.  I do, ...  Thank you Jesus.

24 hours in Iowa

Wow!  What a difference a day makes in Iowa.  Only a few days ago there was no snow and it wasn't to bad outside.   Today we have over 8 inches of snow and tonight it is going to get down in the teens with
 strong winds.

Kinda like the north pole
All I can hear are snow blowers running outside.  I went out and shoveled last night and again this morning.  When I got home from work my driveway had some snow blown over it again but I think I will wait to see what happens tonight and tomorrow.  To add insult to injury, it is going to drop below zero in the next couple of days.  If I hear someone say they love Iowa because we have all four seasons here, I may snap.  lol.

At least my polar bear dog is loving this.

Calvin seems to be flying
Playing with his buddies

Well, I'm gonna go put a fire in the fireplace and enjoy the warmth.

WE BE BLESSED

Well, Canyon finanlly got his braces off.  It's been so long I can't remember when he got them.  He's pretty excited about it.  Now we have to get his retainer.  He's not so excited about that.

I have been busily jotting down ideas and script for my story.  I'm struggling with the opening but I think it will start flowing soon.

Here is an interesting story, that is still unfolding.  A couple of months ago a woman named Lori in our bible study (small group) was offered ownership of the coffee shop where she worked.  And the asking price was only  $1.  Seriuosly, no strings.
The owner (her boss of four years) said he wanted to retire.  He dosen't need money and thinks this is a great place for her ministry.  I think she shares Jesus word as she works.
She didn't think it would come to pass because she needed around $8000 for start up capital and she isn't wealthy.  However, she is incredibly rich in her faith.  We think that is why the offer was made in the first place.  We say, "It's a God thing".  He rewards those that are faithful.
About two weeks ago a customer, who knew nothing about the offer or her need for capital, walked up to Lori and said God told her to loan Lori $8000.  Lori and this woman met on a couple more occasions and finalized the loan.  She takes over the shop on the 17th of this month.

So how are Robyn and I blessed you say?  First to be around a God thing like this is thrilling.  To see his promises come true is a blessing in itself.  But bigger than that, Lori has asked Robyn to come to work at the coffee shop.  At first Robyn declined because the pay is not much.  Lori offered again at church this morning.  Actually, she said she can't take no for an answer.  She offered better hours and a future offer to manage a second shop she wants to open.

Robyn is considering it.  She goes in to train on Thursday and then will decide if this is for her.  Don't tell Robyn, but I think she should take this job.  There is a good chance it is a God thing.

Until another time...

skin of my teeth

Skin of my teeth, that is an odd expression.  I guess that skin on my teeth would be quite thin and that is where we are, walking a thin line.  There was talk today that the powers that be would like to lay us off at work.  It sounds like my immediate boss let them know that we have work to do but I am concerned.  Robyn was laid off a little more than a month ago and things are tight around here.  As you have probably already figured out, I did not win that huge lottery.

Anyway, I made my new years resolution.  Two of them actually.  One was to get to work on the second enstallment of my story. (part two of the Brink series)  I have the whole story already written in my head but it is not easy to get on paper.  Part three is in there too, but the second part is what I am focusing on.  I am excited about getting my ideas on paper, where ever I am.  So far, work has been the place where most of my ideas come to the top, so I have to take a pencil & tablet and walk briskly to the bathroom so I can jot down the things I am imagining.  Once I get all these embelishments in an organized fashion, I will make availible the written transcript to anyone who wishes.

But I said I made two resolutions didn't I.  The second was to be more bold in trying to win people over to Christ.  Yes, I know you may find that annoying, but I decided I will not let that deter me (like it has in the past).  Just so you know, if you ever (and I mean ever) find yourself with questions where I may be able to help you out, ask.  I won't pretend to have all the answers, but I know people who may, and I will try to find out that which you seek.

So, there we are.  If I have more to say at a later date, you knopw I will.  Until then, later...

Jan. 1 2011

Alright. Alright.  Party hats off and lets start a new year.

For some reason Robyn picked today to turn our master bedroom upside down.   We had a list of things to accomplish this holiday week-end and Thursday we did a lot of it.  Yesterday we got quite a bit done and that left "clean bedding" on the list for today.

I'm not sure what happened but when I say turned the bedroom upside down, it is quite literal.  All the furniture was pulled away from the walls, the matress was off the bed and up against the bathroom door.  Everything electric was unplugged and taken away and I'm not sure but I think I saw the bedding get put in the washer.  I'm just doing the heavy lifting and trying to stay out of the way.

On another note, it is freezing outside.  Single digits with wicked wind chills.  I don't want to go out, but I think Canyon and I are going to go see the new Harry Potter movie.  We have seen everyone of the together.  It is a tradition since he was like seven.  They always come out around his birthday in November. We were going to see it in Sioux City over the Thanksgiving holiday but that didn't happen.  So today is the day.

I got to go take a shower so I don't stink up the theater.  If anything else exciting happens I will keep you posted
